모든 아이들은 나 스스로 무엇이든 해보고 싶은 마음을 가지고 태어납니다.
교육은 이런 아이들의 마음을 도와주는 데서 시작돼야 한다고 생각해요.
조금 더 아이 중심적인 교육은 없을까? 한국 유아 교육기관 경험에서 고민했던 부분
저는 17년 동안 한국과 미국의 유아 교육기관에서 선생님으로 일하면서 많은 아이들을 만나왔어요. 처음 한국 유치원에서 영어강사로 일했을 땐, 매일매일 고민이 참 많았지요.
왜 다 같은 시간에 똑같은 걸 해야 하지? 조금 다르면 왜 ‘문제아’로 여겨지는 걸까?
그 시절 대부분의 교육은 단체 중심, 규칙과 질서 우선, 정해진 기준에 맞추는 교육이었어요. 아이 개개인의 개성이나 창의성보다는, 얼마나 잘 따르느냐가 더 중요하게 여겨졌던 분위기였지요.
그런 고민이 더 깊어졌던 이유 중 하나는, 제가 뉴질랜드에서 중·고등학교를 다녔던 경험 때문이었어요. 제가 자란 뉴질랜드는 열린 교육을 추구하는 학생들이 스스로 생각하고 주도하는 환경이 참 자연스러운 학교였어요.
그러다 한국 유치원에서 단체 활동 위주로 교육하는 모습을 보며 "조금 더 아이 중심적인 교육을 할수 있는 방법은 없을까?"라는 갈증이 생겼던 것 같아요.
시애틀에서 만난 운명 같은 교육 – 전영순 박사님과의 만남
그렇게 고민을 이어가던 중,10년 전 미국 시애틀에서 아이를 임신하게 되었어요. 처음 부모가 된다는 건 정말 큰 질문 앞에 서는 일이잖아요. “나는 우리 아이를 어떤 방식으로 키워야 하지?”
그 무렵 정말 감사하게도, 우리나라 몬테소리 교육부분 최고 권위자 이신 전영순 박사님을 만나게 되었어요. 전 박사님께서는 미국 시애틀에서 몬테소리 교육기관을 준비하고 계셨고, 그곳에서 박사님의 수제자^^로 함께하며 저는 몬테소리 교육에 푹 빠지게 되었답니다. 덕분에 교육에 대한 제 관점이 완전히 달라지기 시작한 계기가 되었어요.
몬테소리 교육의 핵심은 아이를 통제하지 않고 도와주는 것
몬테소리 교육은 단순히 조용한 교실에 아이가 혼자 교구를 만져보는 교육이 아니예요. 아이가 스스로 선택하고, 집중하고, 책임질 수 있도록 돕는 자율성 교육이 핵심입니다. 모든 것이 아이의 눈높이에 맞춰져 있어서, 아이가 정말 존중받는 느낌이 들어요.
제가 이 교육을 정말 사랑하게 된 이유는 바로 이거예요. “아이를 통제하지 않고, 도와준다.” 이건 단순한 교육 방법이 아니라, 하나의 삶의 태도라고 생각해요.
MONTI.K, 미국식 몬테소리 교육과 한국식 누리과정의 장점을 결합하다

몬테소리 교육에 장점이 정말 많지만, 사실 약간 보완 됐으면 하는 부분도 있었답니다. 아이들 간의 관계 형성, 정서적인 교류, 즐거운 놀이 활동 같은 부분이 조금 부족하게 느껴지기도 했기에 저는 항상 고민했어요.
“이 좋은 교육 안에 아이들의 감정과 사회성도 함께 자라게 할 수는 없을까?”
그래서 몬티케이는 이 부분을 보완하기 위해 한국식 전인교육을 지향하는 ‘누리과정 K-Nuri’로 균형을 맞추는 커리큘럼을 완성했답니다. 누리과정 K-Nuri는 대한민국의 표준 유아 교육과정입니다. 월간·주간 주제 활동을 통해 아이들의 사회성, 감정 표현, 정서적인 안정, 공동체 의식을 놀이를 통해 즐겁게 배우는 방식이에요.
한국식 유아교육이 지향하는 전인교육, 즉 ‘머리, 마음, 몸이 함께 성장하는 교육’이라는 방향성은 몬테소리 교육에서 자칫 놓칠 수 있는 부분을 아주 잘 보완해 줄 수 있습니다.
즉, 몬티케이는 몬테소리의 깊이 있는 자기주도 학습 위에 누리과정의 감성, 놀이, 관계 중심의 교육 철학을 더해서 아이들의 성장을 더 풍성하고 균형 있게 만들어주고 있어요.

Searching for Child-Centered Education
A Reflection from My Early Years in Korea
For the past 17 years, I’ve worked in early childhood education programs across Korea and the U.S., meeting hundreds of children along the way. When I first started teaching in Korea as an English teacher at a kindergarten, I found myself constantly asking questions.
Why do all kids have to do the same thing at the same time?
Why is it a “problem” when a child is just a little different?
At the time, most schools followed a group-focused structure — prioritizing rules, order, and conformity. What mattered more was how well a child followed directions, rather than who they were or what made them unique. Creativity and individuality were often overlooked.
Part of what made this more noticeable to me was my own background. I had spent my middle and high school years in New Zealand, where education was open-ended and encouraged independent thinking. There, it was natural for students to express themselves, lead their own learning, and think outside the box.
So when I returned to Korea and began teaching in a more traditional setting, I couldn’t help but feel a bit of longing.
Wasn’t there a way to teach children in a more child-centered, creative way?
A Turning Point in Seattle – Meeting Dr. Youngsoon Jeon
Ten years ago, when I was pregnant with my first child in Seattle, that longing became even deeper. I was standing at the start of the biggest journey of my life — becoming a parent — and asking myself the most important question:
“How do I want to raise my child?”
It was around that time I met someone who would completely change my perspective on education: Dr. Youngsoon Jeon, one of the pioneers of Montessori education in Korea. She was preparing to open a Montessori school in Seattle, and I was lucky enough to join her as a close student and teaching partner.
Through Dr. Jeon, I was introduced to authentic Montessori education — not the quiet, rigid version that some might imagine, but a deeply respectful, empowering, and life-changing approach to teaching and parenting.
Montessori: Education Rooted in Respect
Montessori isn’t about keeping children quiet while they play with materials.
It’s about giving them the freedom to choose, the time to focus deeply, and the support to take responsibility for their own growth. Everything is designed from the child’s perspective — so they truly feel seen, heard, and valued.
What I love most about Montessori is that it doesn't try to control the child.
Instead, it aims to help the child grow — at their own pace, in their own way.
It’s more than a teaching method. It’s a way of seeing children with dignity and trust.
Why Monti K Combines Montessori + K-Nuri
At Monti K, we bring together the strengths of two powerful educational frameworks:
Montessori education and K-Nuri, the national early childhood curriculum from Korea.
